Aretha Franklin, singer-songwriter, 76 (March 25, 1942 — August 16, 2018)

One great icon painfully lost to death in the last decade was Aretha Louise Franklin. She was an American songwriter, actress, singer, pianist, and civil rights, activist. Franklin began her career as a child gospel singer in Detroit and later grew to become the Queen of soul.

Franklin’s career did not flourish immediately; she found her acclaimed and commercial success after signing with Atlantic Records in 1966. She built a career that spanned seven decades. The pianist and singer is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, 18 Grammys, and a long list of other honours. She was a trailblazer who inspired generations of music lovers.

David Cassidy, Actor and singer, 67 (April 12, 1950 — November 21, 2017)

Born on April 12, 1950, David Cassidy was an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and Actor. He was best known for the role of Keith Partridge that he played in The Partridge Family. Cassidy combined his love for singing and acting, finding his dream job, and became an idol while as a teenager. Although he later struggled with alcohol addiction, he went on to record albums and performed. He died in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the U.S, at the age of 67.

Della Reese, singer, and actress, 86 (July 6, 1931 — November 19, 2017)

Delloreese Patricia, known professionally as Della Reese, was an American gospel and jazz singer, actress, and an ordained minister whose career spannedseven decades. She was born in the historic Black Bottom neighbourhood of Detroit. Reese was first known as an R&B singer, but she later grew to be recognized as an actress. Her greatest fame was in the 1990s when she cast as Tess, an angel on Touched by an Angel. She died on November 19, 2017, at age 86.

Tom Petty, musician, 66 (October 20, 1950 — October 2, 2017

Thomas Earl Petty was an American songwriter, singer, record producer, musician, and Actor. He formed a band called the Heartbreakers in 1976 and was the lead vocalist and guitarist of the Heartbreakers. Petty’s distinctive voice led the Heartbreakers for four decades. The group was about to wrap up a summer tour to celebrate its 40th anniversary shortly before Petty died. Music stars like Willie Nelson and Jakob Dylan had to come out with a tribute album for Tom. Petty died on October 2, 2017, in Santa Monica, California, U.S.

Glen Campbell, country singer, 81(April 22, 1936 — August 8, 2017)

Glen Travis Campbell was an American guitarist, songwriter, singer, television host, and Actor. He was known for hosting The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour on CBS television and the voice behind “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” (1967). Campbell excelled in his career for over half a century and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2011. He died on August 8, 2017, in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.
