In return, instrumental-award holders are required to give at least one recital per year in the Music Society’s concert series and to participate generally in the Music Society’s work. In cases where lessons are paid for by the school, if the house master and Precentor and Director of Music decide this is the boy’s fault, the missed lesson will be charged to the parents/guardian. In the case of boys who did not gain a Conditional or Waiting List place in the Eton Assessment, a computerised test and interview will be offered on the same day as the music auditions take place. Each scholarship entitles the holder to free tuition on up to 135 minutes of music lessons per week. The award can be supplemented up to 100% of the full School fee in cases of financial need. Where fee assistance is required, an online Bursary Application Form will need to be submitted to the Fees and Bursaries Team, by the deadline of 31 October 2021, for consideration as part of the Bursary awards process .
St Hugh’s1The Anna Haxworth Prize is a sum awarded for a musical performance of between 10 and 15 minutes on an instrument or voice by any student providing, if need be, their own accompanist. The competition is usually held in Hilary term and the winner is invited to give a recital shortly afterwards. St Hilda’s1+2The award is open to singers and instrumentalists but the latter may perform on only one instrument.
Instead, it’s all about song sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and even social engagement. Fans do get to have a say at who they think the winners should be – but indirectly, and over time. Duties depend on the individual but they generally go on to hold an office in the college Music Society, perhaps in charge of organising music events.
Music Award holders are expected to take a full part in the musical life of the University. Awards may be made to cover the full cost or part of the cost individual musical tuition. Additionally, music tutors, Sam Cave and Eileen Pinkarchevski will be listening to the auditions.
